CD review of
Ahrodisia I and Aphrodisia II
"The Next Day" 04/27/05
“Love is when the line
between me and you…gets blurred.”
Words from Spoken Word Artist Mums the Schemer replace the routine and
played out sporadic yells and echoes of Dj (Fill in the Blank), thus
indicating that this is NOT your average everyday mix-tape.
The Brass King (www.TheBrassKing.biz) has given “The Booty Call”
enthusiast the best tool to come along since Viagra;
“Aphrodisia I & II” Unlike other “Slow Jam” mix-tapes or compilations,
The Brass King The rare Grooves Selector
shows an ear for Mood Music BEYOND R. KELLY.Accessing artists ranging from
obvious choices such as Jill Scott, Sade, & Musiq Soulchild, to
artists that the average BET viewer has never heard of like Portis
Head, Jaguar Wright, and my personal favorite UNSUNG Artist Esthero.
The selections are blended with the right mixture of a female voice
Cooing her approval of what she hears, and the now infamous vulgar
verses of Larenz Tate’s character in “Love Jones” From the cover art
to the subliminal (and in your face) innuendos… “Aphrodisia I is meant
to arouse while Aphrodisia II (the next day) is the perfect rise-and-
shine-basking-in-the-glow-of-the-aftermath-of-orgasmic-ascention.
All of the selections for part I make you, the listener, envision the
sun rising to illuminate your lover’s face in the morning. Its
overall sound is pleasant, peaceful, and serene…What the morning after
passion should be. As for the hit-it-and-quit-it crowd, stick to the
last Usher single. For those of you whose sexual attention span is
longer than the three and a half minutes of a radio rotation tune,
take a journey to “APHRODISIA” it's a place not a thing

Aphrodisia III
review
The name is The Brass King, the rare
groove selector. The title of
this compilation is Aphrodisia III: Home alone. So what's in a name?
Everything you need to know! First of all, let it be known that the
Brass King has Brass Balls! Jazz? ...On a "mix tape"? Ya damn right!
He's not called the rare groove selector for nothin'!
There is no false advertising here. The intro to BK's third
installment of his "slow jam/mood muzik" series serves as fair
warning:" like nothing that you've heard before..." a sweet female
voice gives the disclaimer to those who dare to enter
Aphrodisia: "It's a place, not a thing". The delicate piano grooves
cascade gently like the tide on the shore of the sea of tranquility.
Leading the listener into selections by Chet Baker and the United
Future Organism accenting that piano with Upright bass and conga
rhythms. Then BK hits you with the sonic Spanish Fly as Bebel
Gilberto's "Samba De Benecao" imbues the eardrums and initiates that
dopamine rush.
So now you're knee deep in a flood of rhythm and grooves. With cuts
from artists that you NEED to know like Sweetback, Omar, Raheem
DeVaughn, Kindred, Goapele and BK's secret weapon Big Brooklyn
Red, Aphrodisia is proof positive that The Brass King likes to dabble
in hypnotism. Best believe, THIS Home Alone ain't got
nothin' to do
with Macauly Culkin.
If you're familiar with the first two installments of
Aphrodisia, you may recall that one and two are somewhat themed for
the night of passion and the morning after. This compilation serves
as the perfect "love in the afternoon" backdrop, without the daytime
TV dramas. But don't sleep! there IS a storyline to be followed on
this collection that's too hot for TV.
The Brass King once again proves that slow grooves are not just
for the booty, but the mind body and soul. So if you find
yourself "Home Alone" take a trip to Aphrodisia...You've been warned.
